9,429 passengers boarded CityBus routes on Thursday when free rides were offered during “Dump the Pump” day, reported General Manager Martin Sennett.
The number of riders topped CityBus’s daily average of 7,200 riders for June by more than 2,200. “This is in addition to the 22% surge in riders we are experiencing over June last year,” said Sennett. Last June CityBus averaged 5,893 passengers per weekday.
Sennett credits high fuel prices for the gains. “Dump the Pump” was a nationwide campaign coordinated by CityBus and the American Public Transportation Association to tout the financial benefits of transit use in response to rising fuel costs. Many cities across the U.S. participated by offering free rides.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski and West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis proclaimed
Thursday “Dump the Pump” Day in the two cities, and Mayor Roswarski participated by riding the bus to work on Thursday morning.
“We’re citing the high price of gas as just one reason to consider CityBus for regular commutes,” said General Manager Martin Sennett. “There are many more benefits—less traffic congestion, better air quality because greenhouse gases are reduced, and the convenience of having someone else drive. Using public transportation is an easy and significant way to reduce fuel consumption, save on spending and help the environment.”
CityBus operates a fleet of 73, including four hybrid buses. It logged nearly 4.7 million passenger trips in 2007, including more than 340,000 on the free downtown/Purdue trolley.
