CityBus closed for MLK Jr. Day

CityBus will not operate and all offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

Further, because Purdue University classes will not be held on Monday, the weekend is considered a holiday weekend. Campus Loop buses will cease for the weekend Friday, January 13, at 6:00PM. Black Loop and NightRider buses will not operate over the weekend.

CityBus ending bus service to IU Health Arnett Hospital

CityBus will discontinue bus service to IU Health Arnett Hospital on Lafayette’s east side beginning Monday, January 9. General Manager Martin Sennett said the bus route was poorly used during the two years that CityBus operated it resulting in a high cost per rider.

Sennett said the cost was nearly $1,200 per weekday with an average cost per rider of about $55. “This cost was far in excess of our system average of $2 per passenger, so discontinuation of service is warranted from a financial perspective,” he said.

The service was partially funded by a federal grant designed to improve job access in suburban developments. The fact that heavy use of the bus route never developed led CityBus to end its pursuit of the grant funding and discontinue the service, Sennett said.

CityBus could resume bus service in the future if further development near the hospital increases demand. “Right now, the hospital exists more than 1.5 miles away from other developments that drive public transportation demand,” Sennett said, indicating that the low density suburban development is not yet ready to support efficient use of public transportation.

CityBus will continue to operate service along St. Rd. 26 E. to the Meijer store, which is where service will end.

The change also requires the relocation of bus stops at Walmart on Lafayette’s east side. The bus will no longer serve the front door of Walmart and will instead stop at bus stops along Commerce Drive. Sennett said this change is necessary to help the bus keep its new schedule.

CityBus to present route changes at public hearings

CityBus has scheduled public hearings to review proposed changes to bus service along St. Rd. 26 E. in Lafayette. The meetings will be held Monday, December 19 at 10:30AM and at 6:00PM at CityBus, 1250 Canal Rd., Lafayette.

The proposed change to route 7 involves discontinuation of service to IU Health Arnett Hospital and the relocation of bus stops at Walmart to Commerce Dr. These changes will result in lower operating expense and improved operational efficiencies.

CityBus to discuss new downtown transfer center design

CityBus has scheduled a public hearing to review architectural designs for a new downtown transfer center. The meeting will be held Monday, December 12 at 2:00PM at CityBus, 1250 Canal Rd., Lafayette.

CityBus is working to improve the function of its transit hub in downtown Lafayette. The new design adds dedicated stopping bays for each bus route to aid passengers with mobility impairments, the ability to change buses without having to cross traffic, better sheltered waiting spaces, and a new customer service office and lobby area.

Holiday Schedule

CityBus will operate the following schedule during the holidays:

Christmas Eve (Saturday, Dec. 24): Bus service will end early with last trips departing downtown at 5:45PM. Canal Rd. office closed. Downtown office open 10AM to 5:45PM.

Christmas Day (Sunday, Dec. 25): No bus service. All offices closed.

Christmas Holiday (Monday, Dec. 26): Holiday observed. No bus service. All offices closed.

Thanksgiving Break Bus Service

CityBus will not operate on Thursday, November 24th, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Purdue Campus Loop routes will not operate from 6PM Tuesday, November 22nd, through the weekend, including evening and night buses. Campus Loop service will resume on Monday, November 28.

Route 8 Willowbrook/Klondike Express will not operate on Wednesday, November 23rd, or Friday, November 25th. (This route operates only on days when Purdue classes are held.)

State St. Resurfacing Impacts CityBus

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is patching and resurfacing State St. in West Lafayette, which is causing a major traffic disruption that affects regular route and Campus Loop buses serving the area. The project is delaying most routes on campus and is also making it impossible to serve many bus stops in the construction zone.

Generally, if the right traffic lane is closed and the bus is unable to pull to the curb, riders should consider the stop closed and should find the nearest available stop. Unfortunately, INDOT's lane closures are intermittent, which means that CityBus's ability to serve stops along State St. is inconsistent. This makes it very difficult for CityBus customers and bus operators alike.

CityBus sincerely apologizes to our riders for this challenging situation, and we thank you for your extreme patience during the project. For best results, we recommend that riders avoid using bus stops along State St. if possible. If you need assistance finding the nearest bus stop, please review the bus stop list for your route on our web site, or call us for assistance at (765) 742-7433.

Routes 4B and 8 have resumed regular routes with Lindberg opening

After more than a year, Lindberg Rd. has reopened for traffic, ending a year of CityBus detours. Route 8, which was expanded during construction to enhance service to Blackbird Farms, Willowbrook, and McCormick Place, has returned to its regular route as of Tuesday, Nov. 1. The regular route operates a reduced schedule with AM and PM peak hour service only. Route 4B inbound from Walmart to Campus/Downtown is once again serving Lindberg Rd., Willowbrook, and McCormick Place.

Purdue Homecoming Parade to Disrupt CityBus Service

The homecoming parade will close westbound State St. and N. Martin Jischke Dr. from 8:00PM to 9:00PM on Friday, October 21st. This will cause a disruption to CityBus service on campus.

18 NightRider

The buses departing 7th & Main in downtown Lafayette at 7:55PM and 8:35PM will turn right on N. River Rd. from Howard, right up the ramp to westbound Fowler Ave., right on Northwestern Ave., left on Stadium, right on University, left on Tower.

The bus departing Tower Acres at 8:15PM will follow David Ross to right on Stadium, left on McCormick Rd., left on State St., and resume the regular route at State and Russell.

23 Wabash Trolley

Beginning at 8PM, trolleys bound west from downtown Lafayette will turn right on N. River Rd., right up the ramp to westbound Fowler Ave., right on Northwestern Ave., left on Stadium, right on University, left on Tower, left on David Ross, right on Stadium, left on McCormick Rd., left on State St., resume regular route at N. Martin Jischke Dr.

No Campus Loop service during Fall Break

Purdue's Fall Break is Monday and Tuesday, October 10 and 11. No classes will be held.

Campus Loops service will end for the break on Friday, October 7 at 6PM and there will be no service until classes resume on Wednesday, October 12. Over the weekend, no Black Loop or NightRider service will operate.

Construction on Stadium at Russell

The City of West Lafayette street department has announced unplanned construction beginning today (Thursday, September 29) and lasting through Friday (September 30) at Stadium Ave. and Russell St.

The project will cause several detours while the construction is taking place:

Routes 1B, 13, 15, and 17 will not be able to stop at the bus stop at Stadium and Waldron streets, on the south side of Stadium.

Routes 1B and 5 inbound will not be able to make the left turn onto Russell St. from Stadium. Buses will follow Stadium west to left on N. Martin Jischke, left on Third, and will resume the route at Russell. Bus stops along Russell between Stadium and Third will not be able to be served while this detour is in effect.

CityBus regrets the inconvenience to our customers.

Labor Day Weekend

CityBus will not operate on Monday, September 5th in recognition of Labor Day. All offices will be closed for the day.

Because classes at Purdue will not be held on Monday, Campus Loop service will not operate over the weekend. All Campus Loop routes will end operations at 6PM Friday, September 2nd, and there will be no Black Loop or NightRider service on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday nights. Regular route buses will operate the usual schedule on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

All service will resume on Tuesday, September 6th.

Bridge construction will extend bus detours on Lindberg Rd. in West Lafayette through Friday, September 16th.

Through Saturday, Aug. 20th, inbound 4B buses will continue to detour via Cherry Ln. before serving Lindberg Rd. (See route information).

Starting Monday, Aug. 22nd, route 8 will follow an extended schedule, and daytime 4B inbound buses will not serve Lindberg Rd. (See route/schedule.)

The regular routes will resume on Monday, September 19th. This means 4B inbound will resume service directly to Lindberg Rd. and route 8 will follow the regular schedule with morning and afternoon trips operating only. (See 4B schedule, See 8 schedule.)

CityBus changes coming soon

Many CityBus routes will change on Monday, August 22. CityBus is simplifying routes to make riding easier-to-learn for new riders, ending poorly used services, and bringing CityBus closer to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Hospital East.

Here is a rundown of the changes:

1A Market Square: Bus will follow the route used during the day at all times, ending confusing evening detours along 14th and Hartford streets and downtown.

1B Salisbury: Bus schedule changes during the afternoon/evening rush on days when Purdue classes are held. Longer travel times, due to heavy traffic, are built into the new schedule. CityBus hopes this will help buses be better about being on time, making using the bus easier for riders.

3 Lafayette Square: Late-night service Monday through Friday will no longer run because of low use by CityBus riders. The last bus will depart downtown at 8:45PM. Also, the route number will change from 3A to just 3.

4B Purdue West/Klondike: The outbound bus will no longer stop at The Lodge Apartments on Cumberland Ave., West Lafayette. (Route 1B will keep on stopping there.) Longer travel times to allow for heavy traffic are built into the schedule during the afternoon/evening rush, on weekdays when Purdue classes are held. Both changes will help buses be better about being on time, CityBus hopes.

6A Fourth Street: Ends “on-request” service to Evonik and Workman Ln., both in Lafayette, due to rare use by riders.

7 St. Rd. 26 E.: Brings the inbound bus to the front door at Walmart, resulting in a shorter ride from Walmart to downtown.

9 Ready2Go: Brings bus service closer to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Hospital along St. Francis Way, in Lafayette. Bus will no longer go to Lafayette Marketplace and K-Mart, however the 4A bus will still keep stopping there. This change will make it easier for riders to get to the hospital and doctors’ offices behind the hospital.

19 South Campus at Purdue will change because of construction on Harrison St., and 20 Avtech will stop at the Purdue airport every 20 minutes.

23 Wabash Trolley Line: The trolley, when going from campus to Lafayette, will stop at the bus transfer station at Riehle Plaza and Ivy Tech’s new downtown center before going to the county library and upper Main Street. This change will make it easier for Purdue riders to connect with other buses or attend classes at Ivy Tech.

Dancing in the Streets Detours

"Dancing in the Streets" will cause significant detours in the downtown area on Saturday, July 16th. The customer service office in Riehle Plaza will be closed on Saturday at 4PM. Buses will detour as follows for the entire day:

TRANSFER CENTER:
Buses will hold on Third St. between North and Cincinnati.

TROLLEY:
In the morning, when the Farmers’ Market is open, trolleys will turn from Main left on 6th, right on Columbia, and resume route at 2nd and Columbia. Trolley Tours will depart from Columbia and 5th St. instead of Main and 5th.

After the Farmer’s Market closes and traffic on 5th St. reopens, trolleys will turn from Main St. left on 5th, right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd.

In West Lafayette, all day long, trolleys will bypass Tapawingo, Brown, and Roebuck due to street closures. East- and West-bound trolleys will follow State St.

1A MARKET SQUARE:
Inbound evening bus will follow Ferry St. to downtown instead of Main St.

1B SALISBURY:

4A TIPPECANOE MALL:
Outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer's Market open), left on South. Inbound bus will turn right on 5th (6th during Farmer's Market) from Columbia, left on Ferry, resume route at 4th.

4B PURDUE WEST:
The outbound bus will turn left on North, right on 5th (6th while Farmer's Market operating), right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd.

CityBus wind turbines going up

CityBus erected the first of three wind turbines today. The transit agency is building three wind turbines at its administration, storage, and maintenance facilities on Canal Rd. in Lafayette. The other two will be erected early next week and the turbines should begin operating in mid July.

Martin Sennett, CityBus general manager, said the wind turbines will generate about half of the electricity needed to power the facilities which will help offset power produced by fossil fuels. “Diverting from fossil fuels to renewable wind energy could save nearly 500 tons of carbon emissions each year,” said Sennett.

Other benefits include reducing operating expenses by lowering the cost of purchased energy, along with the potential of increasing revenue through the sale of Renewable Energy Credits (REC), said Sennett.

The $1.8 million project is funded by federal stimulus funds in a program designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from public transit providers. CityBus was one of 49 agencies in the nation awarded such grants in 2009. Sennett anticipates that the cost savings and revenue from REC sales will pay for the turbines in about six years.

The wind turbines, Northern Power 100 models produced by Northern Power Systems, are being installed by Cascade Renewable Energy, a division of Cascade Engineering, Inc. headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The turbines are 155-feet tall from base to blade tip, with a hub at 121-feet. Sennett said these are larger than residential-grade turbines but much smaller than utility-grade turbines like those used in rural areas.

Sennett said he believes CityBus is the first transit system in the United States using renewable wind energy to power its facilities. He said many transit systems, including CityBus, are taking measures to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by using hybrid buses. Yet most transit systems still purchase energy from providers that produce it from fossil fuels.

CityBus’s project is a leading demonstration of the possibility to have facilities powered by a renewable source, produced on site.

The results will be known only with time and experience, said Sennett. “We’ll begin to know how much energy and carbon emissions we are saving after a full year of use.”

Dump the Pump 2011 a Success

Passengers rode CityBus 11,430 times on Thursday, June 16 when CityBus celebrated "Dump the Pump." Ridership topped performance in previous years by almost 1,700 rides. In 2010, riders rode 9,722 times and in 7,409 times in 2009.

CityBus offered free rides as a day to recognize the cost savings and other benefits of using public transportation over driving in cars. Dump the Pump is a national day of recognition coordinated by the American Public Transportation Association.

Taste of Tippecanoe Detours Saturday

"Taste of Tippecanoe" will cause significant detours in the downtown area on Saturday, June 18th. The customer service office in Riehle Plaza will be closed on Saturday after 4PM. Buses will detour as follows.

TRANSFER CENTER:
Buses will hold on Third St. between North and Cincinnati. 1B, 4B, 4A, and 5 will hold between North & Brown, 1A, 2A, 2B, 3A, 6A, 6B, 7 will hold between Cincinnati & North.

TROLLEY:
In the morning, when the Farmers’ Market is open, trolleys will turn from Main left on 6th, right on Columbia, and resume route at 2nd and Columbia. Tour the Town Tours will depart from Columbia and 5th St. instead of Main and 5th.

After the Farmer’s Market closes and traffic on 5th St. reopens, trolleys will turn from Main St. left on 5th, right on Columbia, resume route at 2nd.

In West Lafayette, trolleys will bypass Tapawingo, Brown, and Roebuck due to street closures. East- and West-bound trolleys will follow State St.

CityBus invites the community to try public transportation with free rides all day Thursday, June 16.

“‘Dump the Pump’ Day is all about the positive benefits of leaving your car at home and using CityBus instead,” said John Metzinger, CityBus manager of development.

“By giving free rides, we’re highlighting the economic positives of using CityBus, especially the savings riders will realize,” Metzinger said. “The national average savings of using public transit instead of owning a car is $10,230 a year. That’s $853 a month in savings available to those who choose to ride CityBus instead of driving.”

“If you’re already a daily rider, this free day is a thank-you,” Metzinger said. “If you usually drive a car for your daily commute, we invite you to take a free ride on Dump the Pump day to experience the full benefits of using CityBus.”

Dump the Pump is a nationwide campaign coordinated by the American Public Transportation Association. Many cities across the U.S. are participating this year.

CityBus meetings to discuss route changes

CityBus has scheduled public hearings to review proposed changes to two bus routes and to take comments from riders and the general public. Changes to routes 3A Lafayette Square and the Wabash Trolley Line are being considered.

Meetings will be held Friday, June 10 at 11:00AM and 5:30PM at CityBus, 1250 Canal Rd., Lafayette.

CityBus is proposing discontinuation of late night weekday service on route 3A Lafayette Square. The proposal would discontinue trips departing downtown at 9:45PM, 10:45PM, and 11:45PM. Late night services operated by other routes are not affected by this proposal. General Manager Martin Sennett says low ridership and growing costs are reasons for the change.

CityBus also proposes to improve the trolley’s service to Ivy Tech’s new location in downtown Lafayette. Ivy Tech is opening new classroom facilities in August at Renaissance Place at Main and 3rd streets. This proposal will also improve access to CityBus’s downtown transfer center at Riehle Plaza for riders who wish to connect with routes serving other areas of the city.

Also proposed is discontinuation of trolley service to Williams and Grant streets in West Lafayette to improve the trolley’s on-time performance. Williams and Grant streets will continue to be served by route 5 Happy Hollow/Northwestern.

Lafayette named one of Top 25 Greenest Cities by The Newsweek Daily Beast Company

Lafayette earned the 16th spot in The Newsweek Daily Beast’s Top 25 Greenest Cities in the United States, named April 24, 2011, in the online publication, The Daily Beast. It was the only Indiana city listed.

Rankings were determined by five equally rated criteria: percentage of eco-conscious residents; percentage of residents who say they are not eco-conscious; percentage who recycle; average weekday trips on public transportation; and homes with solar heat.

Of Lafayette’s residents, 25 percent say they think and act eco-consciously; 18 percent say they do not. Sixty percent of residents recycle, and .03 percent of homes are solar heated. Use of public transportation averaged 21,511 riders on CityBus each weekday for the 4^th quarter of 2010.

“Our city’s long-standing commitment to green practices is paying off with this national recognition,” said Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski. “Besides the criteria measured for this Top 25, Lafayette has taken a lead in protecting our environment through numerous projects. These include rain gardens, LED streetlights, our underground tunnel project that is reducing combined sewer overflows and bicycle racks we’ve installed downtown, to name just a few.”

The city also renovated the historic building at 515 Columbia St. following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. The building houses the city’s economic and community development departments.

CityBus is a major player, too, with its campaigns to increase ridership, its fleet that is now 25-percent hybrid buses, and installation of wind turbines now under way on its campus to generate electricity for its facilities.

“Using public transportation is one of the greenest steps a resident can take,” said CityBus General Manager Martin Sennett. “Our agreements with Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue University allow students and staff to ride fare-free. That’s one factor in our high ridership. So is the growing awareness among residents that public transportation is a wise environmental choice.”

“There’s widespread support locally for green initiatives in our business and industry community,” said Joseph Seaman, president and chief executive of Greater Lafayette Commerce. “Recently, Caterpillar announced its local plant had converted to LED lighting with the help of Kirby Risk Electrical Supply, making a significantly positive environmental impact. We also have a growing number of businesses who have become Clear Blue Green Certified, indicating their commitment to the environment.”

Tree Lafayette is also pitching in, Seaman noted. “That all-volunteer group is about to top 1,500 in its tree plantings since it was formed in 1993.”

West Lafayette, too, has earned a reputation for its environmental commitment, said Mayor John Dennis, who cited a recycling program that continually sets new records, the city’s Go Greener Commission and its $8.4 million wastewater utility upgrade that won an Environmental Protection Agency award. The utility accepts greases and food waste, in turn producing electricity.

“Our residents eagerly embrace green initiatives and have taken a leadership role in reducing waste,” Dennis said. “One example is our community’s Global Fest, which last fall had a zero-landfill goal.”

A year ago, West Lafayette took on Indiana’s voluntary Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) Community Challenge. “That includes goals of increasing recycling, purchasing an electric vehicle, using biodiesel and implementing other environmental steps,” Dennis said.

In the Daily Beast Top 25 Green Cities list, New York City took first, followed by Las Vegas, Nev., San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Albuquerque, N.M. Completing the Top 10 were Boston, Gainseville, Fla., Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, M.D.

Finals week service reductions

Next week is finals week at Purdue (Monday, May 2nd through Saturday, May 7th). Regular Routes and Campus Loops will operate their regular schedules with the following exceptions:

Ross Ade trips departing the stadium parking lot at :00, :20, and :40 will not operate beginning at noon on Wednesday. All other trips will operate.

AvTech buses departing the airport at :22 will not operate, however service to and from the airport will continue to be available on route 19 South Campus.

Campus Loops will cease operating for summer at 6PM on Friday, May 6. Campus Loop service will not resume until the start of the Fall semester on Monday, August 22nd.

CityBus breaks ground on wind turbines

Green is the theme as CityBus breaks ground for construction of wind turbines just in time for Earth Day.

CityBus is building three wind turbines at its administration, storage, and maintenance facilities on Canal Rd. in Lafayette, with construction to be completed by Fall.

Martin Sennett, CityBus general manager, said the wind turbines will generate about half of the electricity needed to power the facilities which will help offset power produced by fossil fuels. “Diverting from fossil fuels to renewable wind energy could save nearly 500 tons of carbon emissions each year,” said Sennett.

Other benefits include reducing operating expenses by lowering the cost of purchased energy, along with the potential of increasing revenue through the sale of energy cap credits, said Sennett.

The $2.18 million project is funded by federal stimulus funds in a program designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from public transit providers. CityBus was one of 49 agencies in the nation awarded such grants in 2009.

The wind turbines, Northern Power 100 models produced by Northern Power Systems, will be installed by Cascade Renewable Energy, a division of Cascade Engineering, Inc. headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The turbines are 155-feet tall from base to blade tip, with a hub at 121-feet. Sennett said these are larger than residential-grade turbines but much smaller than utility-grade turbines like those used in rural areas.

Sennett said he believes CityBus is the first transit system in the United States using renewable wind energy to power its facilities. He said many transit systems, including CityBus, are taking measures to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by using hybrid buses. Yet most transit systems still purchase energy from providers that produce it from fossil fuels.

CityBus’s project is a leading demonstration of the possibility to have facilities powered entirely by a renewable source, produced on site.

The results will be known only with time and experience, said Sennett. “We’ll begin to know how much energy and carbon emissions we are saving after a full year of use.”

CityBus operates a fleet of 70 buses, including 15 hybrid buses, with three new hybrids coming online this summer.

The House GOP has rejected an amendment to the budget bill which would have preserved funding for public transit. The amendment was rejected on a party-line vote with only two Republicans voting to save Indiana transit; Rep. Randy Truitt of West Lafayette, and Rep. Mike Speedy of Indianapolis voted to preserve transit funding. All other Republicans were opposed to the amendment.

The next step is for transit advocates across the state to contact their Indiana senators. The Senate Appropriations Committee is hearing the budget bill this week, with a public meeting scheduled for 10AM Thursday, March 31st. It is very important to contact each of the committee members below with your stories about what public transit means to you, and to ask them to preserve funding for public transit in Indiana at the current levels. CityBus asks riders, supporters to "Save Indiana Transit!"

CityBus and transit agencies around the state are joining forces to save transit funding. The Indiana legislature wants to cut transit funding by 18%, which will result in deep cuts to service.

Riders and transit advocates should contact Rep. Jeff Espich at h82@in.gov, or by calling (317) 232-9651. Rep. Espich is the leading force behind the cuts. Transit riders need to make their stories known to Espich. He needs to hear how public transit provides vital access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and other opportunities for a large percent of Indiana residents. Transit supporters can tell Espich and other elected leaders that, with rising gas prices, a cut to transit will deeply harm Indiana citizens, especially low-income, disabled, and elderly riders who depend on transit.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Grant St. Closure

Due to a gas leak the city has closed Grant St. on the Purdue campus. Two bus routes are affected:

1) Route 5 bound for Happy Hollow: Bus is taking University St. to right on Stadium, right on Northwestern, resuming route at Wiggins. CityBus recommends riders go to the bus stop at Wiggins and Vine to board the bus. That way, if the city reopens the street and buses resume the regular route, you won't miss the bus.

2) Route 4B inbound is following Wood St. to left on Chauncey, left on River Rd., right up to the Harrison bridge. Nearest bus stops from campus are on the southwest corner of Wood and Marstellar and on the southwest corner of Wood and Grant St. Note: if you wait at Grant St. you may miss the bus if the street reopens and the bus resumes the regular route. In that case, the bus will not be able to stop at Wood and Grant. For this reason, CityBus recommends using the stop at State and Marstellar as the best option.

CityBus will resume regular routes when Grant St. reopens.

Holiday schedule

Lindberg Rd. detour to affect route 4B

The City of West Lafayette is planning to close Lindberg Rd. for bridge construction beginning Monday, November 29th. CityBus route 4B will detour around the closed street for the duration of the project, which is expected to last through August, 2011.

On weekdays, route 4B inbound (from Walmart to campus) will bypass Lindberg Rd. using Northwestern Ave. and Cherry Ln. Riders from Willowbrook, McCormick Place, and University Place going to campus or downtown will not be able to ride route 4B inbound. However, CityBus will provide extended service hours on route 8 for these riders.

Evenings and Saturday inbound 4B service will be available along Lindberg Rd.; the bus will detour from Cherry Ln. to Lindberg Rd. before going to campus and downtown.

The outbound 4B bus (from downtown and campus to Walmart) will not be affected by this detour.

Further, the evening and Saturday inbound 4B will no longer serve Purdue Village. Riders will be able to access the 4B inbound bus along State St.

Thanksgiving schedule

Route 4B Purdue West/Klondike detours through Purdue Village when inbound. There is no inbound service on State St. between Airport Rd. and S. Martin Jischke Dr.
Route 8 Willowbrook/Klondike Express does not operate on days when classes are not held.
The Wabash Trolley Line follows the Black Line route. S. River Rd., Williams, and S. Grant will not be served.

Senior Fair 2010

CityBus will participate in the 11th Annual Greater Lafayette Senior Fair. The event, which features 50 exhibitors, health screenings, entertainment, lunch and thousands of dollars in door prizes, will be held Wednesday, October 6th at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CityBus will provide free rides for the day to passengers who are age 65 or older. To ride for free, simply show the driver proof of your age. Route 6B S. 18th St. serves the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds.

River Road construction to close three bus stops

The city of West Lafayette has asked CityBus to close three bus stops for a construction project on River Road. The bus stops are located along the west side of River Road between Dehart and Robinson streets and are served by CityBus route "5 Happy Hollow."

The three bus stops will close on Tuesday, September 21st. Riders, particularly those living at Williamsburg on the Wabash Apartments, will be affected by the bus stop closures.

While construction is in process, route 5 will detour through the Williamsburg on the Wabash Apartment complex, serving temporary bus stops at buildings 1301-1312, the clubhouse/leasing office, and on the northeast corner of River Rd. at Robinson St.

The city is beginning work on an extension of the Wabash Heritage Trail along the west side of River Rd.

Duke Energy work may close State St. bus stops

Duke Energy's work on streetlights along State Street may close bus stops served by Campus Loop and Regular Route buses today (Tuesday, August 31st).

A press release from Duke indicated that the westbound, right lane of travel will be closed between Grant St. and University Dr. If so, that means that no buses will be able to serve the stops along State St. at Purdue Memorial Union, Memorial Mall Dr., or Oval Dr.

Labor Day weekend service advisory

CityBus will not operate on Monday, September 6th in recognition of Labor Day. All offices will be closed for the day.

Because classes at Purdue will not be held on Monday, Campus Loop service will not operate over the weekend. All Campus Loop routes will end operations at 6PM Friday, September 3rd, and there will be no Black Loop or NightRider service on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday nights.

Regular route buses will operate the usual schedule on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

All service will resume on Tuesday, September 7th.

Clarification on "designated stop" policy

Beginning Monday, August 23, CityBus will serve designated stops only.

CityBus defines a designated stop as a location pre-selected to be a bus stop and listed on the stop list for a particular route. The stop lists for all routes are available on the CityBus web site. To see a stop list, click the link "see bus stop list" on the route's schedule information page. (In some cases, stop lists are provided as separate lists for outbound and inbound buses).

Bus stop signs exist at most locations, however some locations may not have a sign posted. Unfortunately, bus stop signs can disappear due to construction projects, accidents, and vandalism, and it can take several weeks for replacement signs to be installed.

For these reasons, CityBus passengers and bus operators should be guided by the stop list rather than the presence or absence of bus stop signage.

Main St. to close for OUTfest Sat. Aug. 21

CityBus to stop only at bus stops

Soon you’ll need to be at a bus stop to hop aboard CityBus. Starting Monday, August 23, CityBus will stop only at designated locations instead of at street corners along routes when flagged by passengers, which is the current practice.

General manager Martin Sennett says the bus company is making the change to improve efficiency and customer service.

“As ridership increases, it is important for us to operate efficiently in order to stay on time,” said Sennett. “With the current situation, passengers will wait for the bus along some routes at every corner, which slows our service down and results in delays.”

Sennett hopes customer service will improve by reducing conflicts and confusion about the right place to wait for the bus. “Our more than 80 drivers have 80 differing opinions about stop locations, and our thousands of customers also have their preferences,” said Sennett, describing the reasons why customer conflicts can occur.

CityBus has placed about a thousand bus stop signs along routes in Lafayette and West Lafayette during the past year, and has been advising riders of the change since Spring.

“Bus stops are placed about every two blocks along routes, so nobody will have to walk too far,” said Sennett, who anticipates that the transition will go smoothly. “We hope our customers understand our goal is to improve their experience by being more efficient and timely.”

Manager of Development John Metzinger said CityBus is already receiving some requests from riders for new bus stop locations. “We continue to evaluate requests and consider making changes when necessary,” he said.

Metzinger said online schedules now include a list of bus stops for each route to help customers find the closest stop. “Or just look for the bus stop signs; they’re everywhere.”

CityBus to return to Riehle Plaza on Monday

CityBus service will return to Riehle Plaza beginning Monday, July 19.

For nearly two years, the buses have been stopping for transfers along Third Street while construction of the Combined Sewer Overflow was underway.

Beginning Monday, bus service will return to the Downtown Transfer Center at the corner of 2nd and Ferry streets at Riehle Plaza. Bus routes 1B, 3B (Saturday only), 4A and 4B will stop along the east side of the transfer island. Bus routes 1A, 2A, 2B, 3A, and 7 will stop along the west side of the transfer island. The customer service office inside of Riehle Plaza, which remained open during the two year construction project, will continue to be open and available to CityBus riders. Services include sale of bus passes and tokens and general customer service.

9722 Riders Dumped the Pump

CityBus riders enjoyed food, fun and free bus rides on Thursday for CityBus's "Dump the Pump" celebration.

According to John Metzinger, Manager of Development, CityBus provided 9,722 rides on Thursday, an increase over the 7,400 rides typically provided on a summertime weekday.

"That's a 31 percent increase," said Metzinger, who said bus operators reported seeing many new faces from riders trying out CityBus for the first time.

In addition to the rides, about a hundred people joined CityBus at Riehle Plaza for Subway sandwiches and drinks, to listen to music from WAZY, and to visit with CityBus staff.

"It made for a really nice day," said Metzinger. "We are very thankful to serve such a responsive community and to provide green transportation services that save people money."

CityBus offers free rides, lunch Thursday, June 17

Green is the theme as CityBus offers free rides all day Thursday, June 17, on all its routes. It’s also serving free lunch to the public, compliments of Subway, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Riehle Plaza.

“‘Dump the Pump’ Day is all about green—the ‘green’ in dollars that regular riders will save over operating a car, and the positive impact that using public transportation has on the green movement to protect our environment,” said John Metzinger, CityBus director of development, at a news conference at CityBus on Monday, June 14.

“By giving free rides, we’re highlighting the environmental positives of public transportation, the savings riders will realize, and the ease and comfort of using CityBus,” Metzinger said. “A two-person family can save $9,293 annually by not owning a second car. Now, that’s green. And it’s just the beginning of the benefits CityBus provides.”

Benefits to the environment include making a measurable contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which pollute the air, and reducing U.S. fuel consumption. “And riders enjoy easy access to CityBus, comfortable rides, late-night service and extended routes,” Metzinger said.

To illustrate his environmental point, Metzinger was surrounded by energy-efficient items. “Local residents are working hard to curb their carbon footprint, the measure of the impact their activities have on the environment in terms of greenhouse gases produced, which are measured in units of carbon dioxide,” he said. “Many people are using energy-efficient light bulbs, adjusting their thermostats for low consumption, adding insulation to better weatherize their homes, and purchasing Energy Star rated refrigerators and other appliances. These are all great steps. But, combined, all of these efforts still don’t add up to the impact possible when you use public transportation. That’s how ‘green’ CityBus is,” he said.

Jonathan Beever, who was born in Lafayette when his father was a veterinary student at Purdue and returned four years ago for his own graduate studies, joined Metzinger for the news conference.

“An efficient and high-profile public transportation system is an essential element for any sustainable community,” Beever said. “Participation decreases cost of automobile ownership, decreases overall automotive emissions, provides a public service and strengthens community bonds.”

Since moving here in 2006, CityBus has been part of his daily routine. “It was one of the biggest draws for me, when deciding where to live,” Beever said. “Whether it’s commuting to the university for work or taking the trolley downtown to meet friends, I find CityBus to be a convenient, cost-effective and lower-impact option for transportation. It’s not only a great alternative to driving, but it’s also a very prominent symbol: a strong public transportation systems tells the wider public that its community is thriving, responsible and environmentally aware.”

Beever noted that he put just over 5,000 miles on his car last year, less than 420 miles a month and nearly 7,000 fewer miles per year than the average American. “Instead of getting in the car for work every morning, I walk across the street and jump on the bus. Having a daily alternative to driving saves me money but it also cuts down on my impact on the environment,” he said.

Beever encourages others to ride CityBus. “It is something small we each can do to demonstrate our commitment to preserve and sustain the community that we all have a hand in building.”

Dump the Pump is a nationwide campaign coordinated by the American Public Transportation Association. Many cities across the U.S. are participating this year.

CityBus also offers youth passes that can save parents on the costs of driving their children to their summer activities. Children through sixth grade ride free; youth in 7^th through 12^th grades can obtain an annual pass for $1 at CityBus by showing a recent report card or other enrollment information.

Public hearings scheduled

Riding transit saves individuals $9,293 annually

Individuals who ride public transportation can save on average $9,293 annually based on the April 5, 2010 national average gas price and the national unreserved monthly parking rate. On a per month basis, transit riders can save on average $774 per month. Over the past month the cost per gallon of gas has increased 13 cents.

“The Transit Savings Report” released monthly by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) calculates the average annual and monthly savings for public transit users. The report examines how an individual in a two-person household can save money by taking public transportation and living with one less car.

The savings amount is based on the cost of the national averages for parking and driving, as well as the April 5 national average gas price of $2.83 per gallon for self-serve regular gasoline as reported by AAA.

Taking public transportation provides a safe and affordable way for individuals and families to cut costs, according to APTA. In addition, local public transit offers a travel option that has an immediate positive impact in reducing an individual’s overall carbon footprint while helping reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil.

The national average for a monthly unreserved parking space in a downtown business district is $154.23, according to the 2009 Colliers International Parking Rate Study. Over the course of a year, parking costs for a vehicle can amount to an average of $1,850.

The top 20 cities with the highest transit ridership are ranked in order of their transit savings based on the purchase of a monthly public transit pass and factoring in local gas prices for April 5, 2010 and the local monthly unreserved parking rate.*

Methodology

APTA calculates the average cost of taking public transit by determining the average monthly transit pass of local public transit agencies across the country. This information is based on the annual APTA fare collection survey and is weighted based on ridership (unlinked passenger trips). The assumption is that a person making a switch to public transportation would likely purchase an unlimited pass on the local transit agency, typically available on a monthly basis.

APTA then compares the average monthly transit fare to the average cost of driving. The cost of driving is calculated using the 2009 AAA average cost of driving formula. AAA cost of driving formula is based on variable costs and fixed costs. The variable costs include the cost of gas, maintenance and tires. The fixed costs include insurance, license registration, depreciation and finance charges. The comparison also uses the average mileage of a mid-size auto at 23.4 miles per gallon and the price for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline as recorded by AAA on April 5 at $2.83 per gallon. The analysis also assumes that a person will drive an average of 15,000 miles per year. The savings assume a person in a two-person household lives with one less car.

In determining the cost of parking, APTA uses the data from the 2009 Colliers International Parking Rate Study for monthly unreserved parking rates for the United States.

The city of Lafayette has announced lane restrictions on Co. Rd. 350 S. between 9th St. and Concord Rd, beginning Thursday, March 18. CityBus route 6B S. 18th St. may not be able to serve bus stops in the areas affected by temporary lane closures.

Passengers should walk to the nearest bus stop, where the bus will be able to get to the curb. Lane restrictions will be in effect until April 2nd, according to the city.

Cumberland Ave. Detours

Construction on Cumberland Ave. in West Lafayette is resulting in a significant detour on route 1B Salisbury, which is expected to be in effect until mid-June. Cumberland Ave. between U.S. 52 and Yeager Rd. is closed to through traffic, so buses are detouring around the area.

Outbound 1B buses (buses from downtown to Walmart) will turn right at Yeager Rd. from Cumberland Ave., left at MacClure, follow roundabout to right on Win Hentschel, left at U.S. 52, and resume the route at Cumberland Ave.

Inbound 1B buses (buses from Walmart to downtown) will turn right on U.S. 52 from Cumberland Ave., left on Yeager Rd., and resume route at Cumberland Ave.

Day Pass now available

CityBus has begun selling a Day Pass, which allows riders to board as many buses as they need for the rest of the day, all for only $2.

Riders can buy the pass from the driver. Simply ask for the pass and place two dollars in the farebox. Upon payment, the farebox will issue a pass that is electronically encoded for unlimited rides until service ends for the day. To use the Day Pass, insert it into the farebox upon boarding. The farebox will quickly check for validity and then reissue the pass back to the customer. Expired passes are not reissued, and passengers presenting expired passes must pay another fare.

Martin Sennett, general manager, said CityBus is offering the Day Pass as a convenience for riders who pay cash fares or need to make transfers. “Two dollars is the same cost as a round trip on CityBus,” he said. “Many riders who go one way will make a return trip later. But now riders can pay once for all their rides for the day. The Day Pass will make it easier to transfer when more than one bus is needed to complete a trip.”

3B Northwestern detour ends

A detour on route 3B Northwestern will end today, announced CityBus. The detour, which had buses avoiding construction in the area of Sycamore Lane, will end and buses will resume the regular route beginning Saturday, January 9th.

Construction has ceased until April. CityBus will likely need to detour again in the spring, but until then, the bus will follow the published route, with service provided along Carlisle, Sycamore, and Anthrop in West Lafayette.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Holiday events downtown begin this weekend

CityBus is a great way to go downtown for holiday events this weekend.

The 11th Annual Downtown Lafayette-West Lafayette Holiday Open House will be held from 10 am to 9 pm Friday, November 13th, and 10 am to 5 pm Saturday, November 14th.

On Friday evening, Greater Lafayette Commerce will sponsor holiday luminaries that will be displayed in downtown Lafayette-West Lafayette. Also, on Friday evening, the organization will sponsor free carriage rides provided by Moore Sisters’ Carriage Rides from 6-9 pm in Downtown Lafayette.

On Saturday, several vendors from the Lafayette Farmers Market will sell at a Holiday Market on Fifth Street between Main and Columbia Streets from 8 am to 12 noon. Items available will include honey, kettle corn, jams, jellies, baked goods, applesauce, and holiday items.

Trolleys, regular route buses, and route 18 NightRider all serve the downtown area.

Improvements coming for route 3B/5

Riders frustrated by late buses on one West Lafayette CityBus route will be pleased to know that the bus company is making improvements. Schedules for routes 3B Northwestern and 5 Happy Hollow will change beginning Monday, November 16. The problems began when the two routes were linked together, which CityBus did in August to reduce costs; three buses alternate between the two routes. While buses must often hold for time along route 5, route 3B has been running ten to fifteen minutes late on average.

The new schedule gives more time to the 3B Northwestern leg of the route, by allowing route 5 to depart earlier from Williamsburg on the Wabash Apartments on N. River Rd. Riders boarding in this area will need to be at their stops ten minutes earlier than the current scheduled time. Buses will depart on the hour, and at :30 minutes after each hour of operation.

Departure times for other locations along both routes will change to more closely match the actual departure times that have been operated since August.

CityBus hires Dietrich for outreach

Katy Dietrich has joined the staff of CityBus as public relations and outreach coordinator. She is available for offsite presentations, group tours at CityBus and individual travel training for those needing help learning to use public transportation. She also will represent CityBus at community events, fairs and festivals.

Dietrich is a graduate of Fountain Central High School in Veedersburg and attended Purdue University for two years. She previously worked in hospitality and event planning.

She’s a frequent CityBus rider—she doesn’t even own a car. “I firmly believe in public transportation and, specifically, in CityBus,” Dietrich says. “It’s a great system, and I want other people to believe in it, too.”

Free tuition is urban legend

Walk under the bell tower and you won’t graduate in four years. Mischievous students robbing John Purdue’s grave. The lion fountain which roars when a virgin walks past.

These are harmless urban legends about Purdue University. But there is one story spreading around campus that isn’t so harmless; the rumor that if you’re hit by a bus you’ll get free tuition.

Of course, that’s not true, says John Metzinger, CityBus Manager of Development. “Worse, it’s a dangerous rumor that we worry might increase fraudulent liability claims,” he says.

Fraudulent claims are made by people who lie or, worse, intentionally injure themselves to receive money from insurance companies.

While safety of riders and the public is its primary concern, CityBus has installed security cameras on most of its buses to combat fraud.

“We’ve had cases when we suspect that claims are fraudulent, and have successfully fought those cases,” Metzinger said. “The cameras don’t lie. They protect the safety of the public as well as our interests.”

“Placing yourself in harm’s way is never a good idea,” says Metzinger. CityBus reminds passengers to use care when boarding or exiting a bus, and to never step in front of a bus even if it is stopped. If you need to cross the street after exiting a bus, he advises crossing behind rather than in front of a bus. “Or better yet, wait until the bus departs before crossing. That way you can see all oncoming traffic—and drivers in cars can see you.”

As to the free tuition rumor? While the story is spreading on campus, it’s nothing more than another urban legend.

CityBus awarded grant for wind energy

CityBus has been awarded $2.18 million in economic stimulus funds to invest in renewable wind energy for its garage and maintenance facilities in Lafayette.

General Manager Martin Sennett said CityBus will install roof-mounted wind turbine units to generate most of the electrical energy used by CityBus. The system will produce approximately 720,000 kilowatt hours each year, saving CityBus about $61,000 in energy costs annually.

Sennett said Purdue University student Raymond Mui prepared the grant application. Mui is a junior majoring in civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation and works part time as an intern for the bus company.

“I’m very proud of Raymond for writing a grant that successfully competed with 200 transit systems around the country,” said Sennett. “We look forward to reducing our carbon footprint.”

“The project is unique,” said Mui. “To my knowledge CityBus will be the only Indiana transit system relying on renewable wind energy for its facilities.”

The next step is to request proposals and contract with vendors. The project will be completed by Spring 2010.

CityBus was one of 43 U.S. transit systems awarded grants totaling $100 million, and the only grant recipient in Indiana. The grants were awarded as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction program.

Senior Fair 2009

CityBus will participate in the 10th Annual Greater Lafayette Senior Fair. The event, which features 50 exhibitors, health screenings, entertainment, lunch and thousands of dollars in door prizes, will be held Wednesday, October 7th at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CityBus will provide free rides for the day to passengers who are age 65 or older. To ride for free, simply show the driver proof of your age. Route 6B S. 18th St. serves the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds.

CityBus's real time information to go offline

CityBus announced today that its real-time passenger information systems will be unavailable due to a systems upgrade.

General Manager Martin Sennett said CityBus is upgrading its outdated system to provide more reliable information to riders in the future. The system uses GPS locations of buses to publish estimated departure times in real-time. CityBus will take the system off line on Tuesday, September 1st, and the system will be down until the upgrade is complete next Spring.

“Our current system is aging out at eight years old,” said Sennett. “We’ll be expanding our capability by moving from a low-bandwidth radio network to wireless technology with far greater bandwidth. This will improve the speed of transmission and reliability of information when the project is complete.”

Sennett said CityBus regrets the inconvenience to customers who rely on real-time information to plan bus trips. “The temporary loss of real-time information will require riders to rely on scheduled departure times instead of real-time data to plan their trips. We regret that real-time information will not be available, however the upgrade will result in improvements in the long run,” said Sennett.

CityBus is completely revamping its Computer Aided Dispatch/Automated Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) technologies, which were installed in 2001. CityBus has awarded the upgrade to Mentor Engineering, Inc. at an expense of just over $1 million.

CityBus is ending its relationship with its current CAD/AVL provider effective September 1st, bringing current systems offline.

Real-time information is broadcast to electronic signs at major bus stops like Beering Hall on University Street in West Lafayette, and to users of CityBus’s web site feature called “MyRide.” Users can view real-time information on the web page, wireless devices, or through a Widget placed on a computer desktop. None of these will display real-time departures while CityBus works on the upgrade.

CityBus expanding service Monday, Aug. 17

CityBus will extend service to Clarian Arnett Hospital and will begin running several routes until midnight beginning Monday, August 17, 2009, announced Martin Sennett, General Manager.

Route 7 State Rd. 26 E. will provide service to the new hospital on Lafayette’s east side every 30 minutes during the daytime Monday through Saturday, once per hour on weeknights, and once per hour on Sundays.

Also starting Monday, many routes will begin operating until midnight. After running every 30 minutes until 7:15PM, the following routes will operate once per hour with trips departing downtown from 7:45PM until 11:45PM Monday through Friday:

1A Market Square
1B Salisbury
3A Lafayette Square
4B Purdue West/Klondike
7 State Road 26 E.

Route 4A Tippecanoe Mall will be expanded by two nighttime trips with the last bus departing downtown at 10:45PM.

Sennett said the expansion is designed to help late night workers get to jobs, and to help Purdue and Ivy Tech students get home after studying. The additional service is funded with a job access grant which must be renewed each year.

CityBus expands hybrid bus fleet with 7 new buses

CityBus has added seven new hybrid buses to its fleet, Marty Sennett, CityBus general manager, announced at a new conference. The new buses bring the total number of hybrids to eleven out of nearly seventy buses.

CityBus added five 40-foot hybrids manufactured by Gillig Corporation in Hayward, California, and two 60-foot articulated hybrids manufactured by New Flyer in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Sennett pointed out that many components, including engines, hybrid drives, and steering components, were built in Indiana. The 60-foot buses have two rider sections and will be used on high-capacity routes.

U.S. Representative Steve Buyer, West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis, and Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski participated in the news conference. Buyer helped secure federal funding for the buses, which cost $516,000 for the 40-foot buses and $780,000 for the 60-foot buses. 80% of the cost was paid with federal funding.

“Hybrid buses use less fuel and reduce emissions,” said Sennett, “so investment in the technology is worthwhile.” Three additional hybrid buses are on order from Gillig, and will arrive next summer.

CityBus offers free rides, Thursday, June 18

All rides on CityBus will be free all day on all routes on Thursday, June 18, as residents are encouraged to “Dump the Pump” and use public transportation instead, Marty Sennett, CityBus general manager, announced at a new conference at CityBus.

Residents who regularly ride CityBus can save on transportation costs, ease traffic congestion and contribute to the community’s air quality, Sennett and other speakers said. Their messages were reinforced by children from McAllister Center’s Summer Day Camp, who rode in on a hybrid CityBus for the news conference. They carried signs reading “Save Money” and “Live Better” and shouted “Dump the Pump” as they tossed miniature gas pumps into a recycling bin.

“Dump the Pump is an opportunity for our community to experience how riding CityBus helps people save money and live better,” Sennett said. “The average annual cost in the U.S. to own and operate a car is $8,600. During challenging economic times like these, a two-car family can save $8,600 a year by becoming a one-car family and using CityBus for daily trips to and from work. And as we’ve seen, gas prices can go wildly high, making it imperative to consider permanent, less expensive, and environmentally wise ways to commute.”

West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis said, “This is a great time to consider the ways that CityBus helps people not only to save money, but to live better—by easing parking and traffic congestion. Last year, there were 5 million rides on CityBus. Imagine what the traffic and congestion would be like if those rides were taken in cars instead.”

Lafayette City Councilman Rick Cornstuble agreed. “Here’s one more, he said: CityBus riders also help keep our air clean by saving 4,800 pounds of carbon emissions per person each year. Better air quality is essential to better quality of life.” He also heralded CityBus for its vital function in ensuring that students, youth, elderly, low-income, and residents with disabilities have access to jobs, education and healthcare.

Dump the Pump is a nationwide campaign coordinated by the American Public Transportation Association. Many cities across the U.S. are participating this year.

Public Hearings Scheduled

Public Hearings are scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th, at 11:00AM and 5:30PM, to be held at CityBus, 1250 Canal Rd., Lafayette. The public is invited to comment on proposed changes on routes 3B, 5, and 7.

On the agenda are the following route changes:

3B Northwestern
1) Route will be streamlined to improve efficiency. Weekday service to and from the downtown transfer center will be discontinued. Service along S. River Rd., Williams, and Grant will be discontinued. (Discontinued service areas will continue to be served by other routes.)
2) Route will be interlined with route 5 to operate more efficiently (same campus service provided with one less bus.)
3) The schedule is better aligned with the Purdue class beginning and ending times. 3) The Saturday 3B route will continue to serve the downtown transfer center.

5 Happy Hollow
1) Route will be streamlined to improve efficiency. Service along Northwestern Ave. will be discontinued. Inbound bus (from Kalberer) will follow State St., University, and Stadium (and then change to route 3B). Outbound bus (to Kalberer) will arrive on campus at Stadium and Northwestern from route 3B and will then follow Stadium, Russell, State, Sheetz, Wood, and Grant streets.
2) Route will be interlined with route 3B to operate more efficiently (same service provided with one less bus.)
Proposed 5 Happy Hollow Schedule (Excel Format)

7 St. Rd. 26 E.
1) Route is extended to serve Clarian-Arnett Hospital.
2) Route is streamlined to maintain current ride times. Service at the front door of Wal-Mart is discontinued, with bus stopping instead at the shelter at Commerce and Marketplace.
3) Underperforming service on Farabee and Kossuth (from Earl to Farabee) is discontinued.
4) Evening expansion with new trips departing downtown at 7:45, 8:45, 9:45, 10:45, and 11:45PM. (Weekdays only.)
5) Sunday route is streamlined to improve timeliness of transfers downtown. Service is discontinued on 26th, Kossuth, Earl (south of Ferry).
